Across Michigan, seniors are discovering they can no longer afford to live alone

in the homes and towns they helped build.

Rents and property taxes keep rising while Social Security and fixed incomes barely move, forcing more older Michiganders to look for roommates or move away from their communities just to stay housed.

National data show that older renters are among the most housing‑cost‑burdened people in the country, and the stories are playing out right here in our own state: grandmothers taking on strangers to split the rent, widowers wiped out by one medical bill, people in their 70s and 80s starting over from scratch because housing has been treated like an investment vehicle instead of a basic need.

The Eco Village Co‑op is a Michigan‑born response to this crisis. Instead of isolating seniors in overpriced apartments or risky roommate situations, we’re developing a self‑reliant, attainable‑home community in northern Michigan where elders can downsize into right‑sized homes, share resources, and have a real voice in their cost of living.

Our quad/fourplex cohousing model is designed with Michigan seniors (and students) in mind: private entrances and independent units for dignity and safety, shared common spaces and infrastructure to lower monthly costs, and a cooperative ownership structure that keeps housing permanently attainable rather than at the mercy of out‑of‑state investors.

Imagine being 65 or 75 in Michigan and not having to choose between groceries, prescriptions, and rent—because your community was designed for stable costs, mutual support, and aging in place. That’s the future Eco Village Co‑op is working to build for Michigan seniors, right here, right now.

If you’re a Michigan senior, family member, or ally who wants to see this happen, stay connected in this group, share this post, and help us prove that community‑owned, elder‑centered housing can start here and spread across the state.
